Cherry blossom trees are found aplenty in Shillong and its adjoining suburbs. From the first week of November, the flowers start blooming. The trees stay in full bloom for about 15 days before the flowers are shed.
Meghalaya’s State capital is draped in shades of pink and white these days with beautiful cherry blossom trees in full bloom.
Shillong too may have its own Cherry Blossom Festival like the centuries-old festival in Japan, known as Hanami in that country.
There are two varieties found here that include trees with white and pink cherry blossom flowers. Botanically, these trees are known as Prunus cerasoidus.
